DENVILLEt, NJ (June 12, 2010) – What do Glen Rock's career soccer scoring leader do during his summer recesses while preparing to compete at the NCAA Division I level in the fall? Sam Petrone compets for the New Jersey Rangers of the United Soccer League that plays in the Premier Development League, the PDL as it is known. It is a national group of 67 teams that is a minor league which allows up to eight professional players on a roster with college student/athletes. On Saturday (June 12), while the US and England were playing to a 1-1 draw in the World Cup competition in South Africa, Petrone was running the field in Denville as the Rangers battled the Hoggs from the British Crown Colony of Bermuda in the first match of a doubleheader. Petrone is preparing for his upcoming campaign with the Pirates of Seton Hall University which competes in the BIG EAST Conference. Against Bermuda, Petrone was on the field for all 90 minutes, keeping the pressure on the visitors from his left midfield slot in a 2-0 loss. As a sophomore for the Pirates, Petrone was named to the National Team of the Week by Soccer America and the College Soccer News. He was designated the National Player of the Week by the NSCAA and College Soccer News after an eight goal-week, Petrone led the Pirates in scoring with nine goals and 21 points for the season and was named the Nike/Alltel Classic MVP.
